Kara Tointon was ''relieved'' when her character, Dawn Swann, was written out of 'EastEnders'

Kara Tointon was "relieved" when she was written out of 'EastEnders'.

The actress - who played Dawn Swann in the BBC soap until 2009 - got caught up in the show's "bubble" and even started answering to her character's name, but ultimately found the job repetitive and "boring".

She told the Daily Mail newspaper: "I knew it was time for me to go. When you don't have a big storyline it can be boring. All your character seems to do is order a sandwich in the cafe for months on end.

"But you're also conscious that you need to pay the mortgage.

"You get caught up in the 'EastEnders' bubble and start to answer to your character's name,

"In a way I was relieved when Dawn was written out. Would I have had the guts to leave myself?"

Kara, 27, became so disillusioned with acting that only entered 'Strictly Come Dancing' - which she went on to win - last year in order to raise money to start a new career.

She explained: "When I left 'EastEnders' I did a few modelling jobs but suddenly thought, 'It's been a year and I haven't done any acting.' I was 25, and I had a mortgage to pay. So I went on 'Strictly' last year to earn some money to set myself up as an interior designer.

"I knew 100 per cent what I was going to do. It was goodbye to acting."

Appearing on the show - on which she met her Russian dancer boyfriend Artem Chigvintsev - gave Kara a new confidence boost however, and she has now returned to the stage starring in a production of 'Pygmalion' in London.
