Jessika Kenney & Eyvind Kang - Aestuarium
Ideologic Organ, Edition Mego’s ‘old records’ wing, have given this 2005 recording by Sunn O))) and Mick Patton collaborators Jessika Kenney and Eyvind Kang the handsome reissue it deserves. A Stephen O’Malley sleeve graces this beautiful piece of spectral music, recorded on the shores of Colvos Passage in Washington State. Those familiar with the duo only through their work with the avant-metallers shouldn’t be disappointed by the lack of heavy guitars, for this album possesses a quiet intensity of its own. Responding to the natural surroundings, specifically the slow lapping waters, Kenney and Kang meditate on loss. Delicately traced by Kang’s viola and oud, Kenney’s pure, acutely pitched vocals inhabit haunting melodies inspired by Gaelic pslams and Tibetan notational gestures.
