'Coronation Street' star Betty Driver has been rushed to hospital after contracting what is believed to be pneumonia

'Coronation Street' actress Betty Driver has been rushed to hospital.

The 90-year-old veteran star - who plays hotpot-loving Betty Williams in the ITV1 soap - was admitted earlier in the week, and is believed to be suffering from pneumonia.

An insider told The Sun newspaper: "Obviously we are all worried because Betty is such a huge part of the show. She's an absolute trouper and still turns up for work and puts in a flawless performance.

"We've all sent out love and best wishes and are hoping for the best."

A 'Corrie' spokesperson added: "Betty has been taken to hospital. We are all wishing her a speedy recovery."

With Betty - who has been a central feature of 'Coronation Street' for the past 42 years - due to be filming scenes this week, producers have had to frantically re-write scripts to account for her unexpected absence.

However, the actress has previously admitted she loves her role in the soap so much that she is prepared to die on the cobbles.

She said: "I love working on the Street because everyone on it is like my family. I don't want to leave at all - I want to die on set."
