TOWIE extras face the axe
ITV2 is set to shake-up the next series of 'The Only Way Is Essex' by axing many of the show's current 'extras' although the main characters are safe
ITV2 is set to shake-up the next series of 'The Only Way Is Essex' by axing many of the show's current stars.
Producers of the reality TV programme - which has been a huge hit for the station - have decided to "trim the fat" and keep only the characters that are central to the plot, meaning several 'extras' won't be returning for the third series.
An insider told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "It's the biggest shake-up to date. 'TOWIE' will revert to its basic formula, focusing on the main characters in the first series.
"When filming wrapped on Saturday (30.04.11), it was very emotional as it would be the last time they would all be together like this."
While stars such as Mark Wright and his fiancee Lauren Goodger, Lydia Bright, James 'Arg' Argent and Joey Essex will be safe, the likes of Chloe Sims, Lucy Mecklenburg, Maria Fowler and Harry Derbidge are facing the chop.
The insider continued: "Mark is the biggest draw. Viewers have been glued to their screens watching the heartthrob play out his turbulent love affair with Lauren and that's what they want to see. This season there have been a lot of extras thrown into the mix, who detract from the actual drama."
However, one original star who is not set to return is glamorous beautician Amy Childs as she is said to be quitting to do her own show.
The second series of 'The Only Way Is Essex' comes to an end on Wednesday (04.05.11) with an hour-long special set in Marbella, Spain.
