'Coronation Street's John Stape will evade police by hiding in a secret loft at the home he shares with his wife Fiz and their daughter Hope before threatening to kill himself by jumping off a roof

'Coronation Street's John Stape will hide out in a tiny loft at his home to evade police.

The deranged teacher goes missing after his wife Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) calls the police when she discovers he has kept her brother Chesney Brown (Sam Aston), and friend Kirk Sutherland (Andrew Whyment) imprisoned in the cellar of Alan (Michael McStay) and Dorothy Hoyle (Jean Fergusson), who he also holds captive as secrets about the three deaths he is involved in begin to unravel, but he only goes as far as their home.

His ploy mirrors that of real life criminal John Darwin who faked his death in a £250,000 insurance scam and continued to live next to his home in Hartlepool, Co. Durham.

Viewers of the ITV1 soap will see John sneak around his house at night looking for food and watching his wife Fiz before she wakes up and discovers him holding their baby Hope. When he attempts to flee with their daughter Fiz is knocked down while chasing him and after he visits her in hospital he runs on to the roof where he threatens to jump with the baby.

A source told The Sun: "John truly believes he is a good man who had bad luck, he's lost the plot."

John is expected to take his own life - although it is unclear if Hope will survivie - as Graeme Hawley, who plays him, recently revealed he expects his alter-ego to be killed off whenever his six-month contract is up for renewal.

He has said: "Every six months I expect to be gone. I can't see there being a happy ever after for John Stape. But I just turn up, do what I'm told and don't think about it."
