Johnson Beharry topped almost all Ice votes
War hero Johnson Beharry won the 'Dancing On Ice' public vote almost every week he skated on the show
Johnson Beharry won the 'Dancing On Ice' public vote almost every week he was on the show.
The Iraq war hero managed to secure a place in the competition up until the semi-final, despite low scores from judges and it has now been revealed he was hugely popular with viewers.
Revealing the figures for the first time on ITV's 'This Morning' show, host Phillip Schofield said: "Week one, Johnson was in the lead with 28 per cent of the vote.
"Week two was Denise Welch with 31 per cent .
"Then week three, four, five, six, seven and eight it was Johnson. Week nine it was Laura Hamilton with 24 per cent. Week ten it was Johnson again. Week 11 was Sam Attwater with 30."
Despite being given many other offers of television work, Johnson, a Lance corporal who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his efforts in Iraq in 2005, he said he has turned them down because he doesn't want to cash in on his celebrity.
He said: "I'm not a celebrity, I'm a soldier. I've got a stable job in the Army that I love so I won't go outside that.
"I was happy to get this opportunity to see what I was capable of. I hadn't seen ice - or ice skates - before the show. But I would never class myself as a celebrity. I'm Johnson Beharry VC. I would never fit in this world. I do my day job and that's it." Johnson and his dancing partner, Jodeyne Higgins, averaged a score of 14.9 from the judges for their time on the show, placing them seventh out of the 12 partners which qualified for the show.
The show was eventually won by 'EastEnders' star Sam last night (28.03.11), who beat off competition from fellow finalists Laura and Chloe Madeley.
