Hard-to-find designer homewares and artist exhibition space
The kind of design we like and are passionate about wasn’t available in Glasgow. The shop was initially thought of as the ideal vehicle to engage local people with the story of design and hopefully illuminate the wider design process.
We offer a carefully curated selection of products and accessories manufactured by world-leading, contemporary brands who, in turn, work with leading international designers from the past and present like Alvar Aalto, Konstantin Grcic, Tom Dixon, Jasper Morrison and Achille Castiglioni, manufacturing new work as well as classics from years gone by. We also like to work with talented and emerging young designers by presenting their work or by commissioning new products under our own brand name. Our range covers stationery and jewellery, through to larger homeware items like furniture and lighting. We have some great acrylic jewellery just now, by a young designer, Inca Starzinsky. Based on hand shadow animals, it’s a unique set of acrylic rings and pendants, all beautifully packaged.
We opened in 2008 on James Morrison Street, and moved to new premises last September, sharing a space with NORD Architects, opposite The Briggait. The majority of our customers work in the creative industries in some way. With our website we are slowly developing a worldwide audience.
The products that sell well are often the things that can’t be found easily elsewhere; objects that have a relatively small circulation. Those products related to designers we’ve collaborated with for specific projects have done reasonably well – our work with an emerging designer, David Weatherhead, for example. Quality, character and, to a lesser extent, exclusivity, all play a part.
There is definitely an affinity between independent shops in the city by virtue of the challenging retail landscape. We’re often talking with our friends about how we can collaborate to bring something different to the high street. The best part of my job is having a customer excited about one of the designers we represent in our collection – that’s really rewarding.
