Samia Smith is enjoying the fact her 'Coronation Street' character Maria Connor has been given a ''miserable'' storyline.

Samia Smith thinks it's "nice" to have miserable storylines again.

The 'Coronation Street' actress - who has 16-month-old daughter Freya with estranged husband Matthew Smith - has been filming harrowing scenes which see her character, hairdresser Maria Connor, brutally assault by new businessman Frank Foster (Andrew Lancel) and the 28-year-old beauty was pleased to be given such a major plot.

She said: "I suppose it's been difficult to film, mostly because you want to get it right.

"Every scene you do you want to get right but this has been especially challenging because of the nature of it.

"But it's good to be busy and get back into to doing gritty storylines again. Since I came back from maternity leave it's been light and fluffy and back in the salon, so it's nice to have a bit of misery again."

Despite the difficult storyline, Samia insists she has no problems switching off at the end of each day.

She added in an interview with OK! magazine: "Do I find it hard to switch off? Not really no. I just listen to music in my car on the way home. I put Gaydio on - it's a Manchester radio station which plays really silly, camp dance music. It's brilliant. I have to sing along!"
