Beverley Callard blames 'Coronation Street' for her smoking habit because her character Liz McDonald smokes
Beverley Callard blames starring in 'Coronation Street' for making her smoke.
The actress - who plays Rovers Return landlady Liz McDonald in the ITV1 soap - gives up cigarettes when she is on a break from filming but admits she always starts smoking again when she is back on set.
When asked if she still smokes, Beverly said: "Sometimes I do. I've not been filming much recently and it's great because I don't really smoke, but then I go back to playing Liz and start again."
The 53-year-old actress - who is also well known for her fitness DVDs - insisted she doesn't always stick to a healthy diet.
She told new! magazine: "I'm not a saint. I eat chocolate and have a Chinese takeaway every now and again.
"I also adore Cadbury's Milk Chocolate Buttons. If I eat one, I have to eat 20. My other big thing is bacon butties."
Beverley was diagnosed with clinical depression in February 2009 and admitted struggling with the illness affected her weight.
She explained: "My whole life changed. I stopped exercising for 17 months and gradually, over that time, I put weight on.
"I was about 8st 10lbs before I became ill and I went up to just under 11st. I went from a size 8 to a size 14, which for me is big. Liz's mini-skirts were stretched to capacity."
