'EastEnders' and Coronation Street's New Year's Eve (31.12.10) storylines have sparked outrage among viewers.

More than 2,000 'EastEnders' fans complained to the BBC about the soap's gruesome scenes, which saw Ronnie Branning's (Samantha Womack) baby die from cot death, leading the traumatised mother to snatch Kat Moon's (Jessie Wallace) newborn tot while the infant lay sleeping.

According to The Sun newspaper, BBC bosses have confirmed they were "swamped" with calls from angry viewers, who felt the episode had made it look like mothers affected by cot death would resort to stealing another baby.

One took to the internet to vent their distaste, saying: "Easily the sickest storyline the BBC has sunk to so far. Sensationalising cot death is revolting.

"Shame on you BBC for using other people's devastating pain to boost your viewing figures."

Meanwhile, ITV1 also reportedly received a barrage of complaints from viewers blasting the show's steamy lesbian scenes featuring teen lovers Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) and Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson).

One fan vented online: "The show has used two pretty teenagers that young girls will look up to to glamorise lesbianism."

Elsewhere, BBC viewers were also said to be upset by BBC One's new David Walliams and Matt Lucas comedy 'Come Fly With Me', with more than 70 complaints received about the first episode on Christmas Day (25.12.10).
