The Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood wants the band to headline Glastonbury festival next year

Ronnie Wood wants The Rolling Stones to headline Glastonbury next year.

The rocker said he is itching to get back with the group - who have been hotly tipped to kick off a tour in 2011, ahead of expected 50th anniversary celebrations in 2012 - for the first time in three years next summer.

He said: "I'd love to do it. I'm always up for the festivals. As far as the Stones are concerned, we haven't had a get together for three years but it's high time."

Ronnie has previously said the 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' band are set to meet this month and discuss their plans for moving forward.

Both drummer Charlie Watts and guitarist Keith Richards have previously told how they're ready to tour, with the latter saying he'd approached singer Mick Jagger about it.

He said: "I'm always ready. Mick and I spoke about a month ago in New York.

"It's at that mumbling stage. But I had some outtakes from the last sessions we did for 'A Bigger Bang' and said, 'Just to jog your memory.'

"So there's interaction. You don't want to push it too hard."

The Rolling Stones last performed live in 2007 for their tour in support of 'A Bigger Bang'. That same year they played at the Isle of Wight festival, their first appearance at a UK festival since 1976.

Other acts rumoured to be headlining Glastonbury - one of the biggest festivals in Europe - include Prince, Coldplay and Radiohead.
