'X Factor' favourite Matt Cardle was criticised for his "safe" performance in last night's semi-final (04.12.10).
The former painter-and-decorator - who battled flu during the week - won praise from the judges for his performance of 'You Got The Love', but did not impress with his second song Billy Joel's 'Always A Woman'.
Simon Cowell said: "Unfortunately this was your worst song. It is exactly what you're not. You're not that safe artist. You shouldn't be singing a song like that you can't put your stamp on."
While Matt agreed admitting "'that was not my best performance", judge Cheryl Cole acknowledged his health battle during the week saying "I can see by the look in your eyes you feel so ill. Everybody loves you, you've got the support. I hope I see you in the final."
Liverpool singer Rebecca Ferguson wowed the judges with her two songs 'Show Me Love' and 'Amazing Grace'.
Louis Walsh said: "You're my favourite contestant ever. You're likeable, you're lovable. you've got star quality. I think you're amazing."
Mary Byrne - who was in the bottom two last week - gave an emotional performance of 'The Way We Were' and sang the up-tempo 'Never Can Say Goodbye' while Dannii Minogue was not impressed with Cher Lloyd's choice of two rap songs 'Nothin' On You' and 'Love The Way You Lie'.
Boyband One Direction - who were mentored by Cheryl this week after Simon was taken ill - received criticism for their cover of Rihanna's 'Only Girl in the World' however they wowed with their version of 'Chasing Cars' by Snow Patrol.
Dannii said: "Guys, you've had a really tough week and that was such a classy classy performance. You've grown up before our eyes and we've never had such a good band on the X Factor. I'm so proud to see you five on the show."
