'Primeval' is to return for a fourth and fifth series.
The sci-fi drama - which follows a group of scientists as they battle prehistoric creatures - has been commissioned to return to TV screens in 2011 as part of a joint venture between ITV1 and UKTV.
Viewers will see three new characters join the cast - Matt (Ciaran McMenamin), Jess (Ruth Kearney) and Captain Becker (Ben Mansfield) - with stars Connor (Andrew-Lee Potts) and Abby (Hannah Spearritt) returning as "very different" people after getting stuck in the past at the end of series three.
Hannah explained: "Connor and Abby are very different people, but they became a very strong unit while they were away and a mean team. But in their heads they couldn't be in more different places, in terms of hope for getting home.
"Connor is very optimistic and believes and wants to get home, and although Abby does too, she's beginning to lose faith. But that combination was the key to their survival, and the contrast between them was crucial. Connor's naivety and Abby's practicality were a good balance."
The 29-year-old actress - who is a former member of pop group S Club 7 - also admitted her alter-ego will be very "wary" of the new characters, as she feels "betrayed" that they have been allowed to take over her role.
She said: "She's wary. It is a lot to take in. When they're told there's no place for them in the ARC any more she feels totally betrayed.
"Abby's happy to be back but it's all one day at a time because things aren't as they were."
