Cheryl Cole's second chance ban
'X Factor' bosses reportedly banned host Dermot O'Leary from going back to take Cheryl Cole's vote after she refused to choose between her two acts Katie Waissel and Treyc Cohen
'X Factor' bosses banned Dermot O'Leary from allowing Cheryl Cole to take the vote to deadlock on Sunday night (07.11.10).
The TV host has admitted producers told him if the girls' mentor refused to choose between Katie Waissel and her sing-off opponent Treyc Cohen, it would go to a majority vote.
He explained: "We talked about it in the break because you find out two or three minutes before what's going to happen. My producer said, 'Look, if Cheryl decides to opt out we go to majority vote'.
"She did decide to opt out - and then she said, 'Come back to me and we'll do deadlock'."
Producers anticipated Cheryl would refuse to vote immediately after Simon - who chose to save Katie - and decided going back to her after Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh had made their decisions would "devalue" the votes of her fellow judges.
However, Dermot was banned from returning to take the 'Promise This' singer's vote, meaning Katie was put through on a majority from Louis and Simon.
He said: "You can't do that because it kind of devalues the other two judges' votes so that wouldn't have made sense. It would have been a lot easier for me for Cheryl to be last. There's no precedent to it so it's tricky."
While the presenter admits producers concocted the plan to ban the Geordie beauty from casting her vote, he maintains 'X Factor' bosses never know in advance which way the vote is going to go.
Writing on his twitter page, he said: " We never know which way the Judges are going to vote. Ever, the only thing I know is who's in the bottom 2 when I'm given the card. I don't know which judge to go to until I'm called, and the judges, including simon, dont know the vote or who we're coming to next. Its that simple" (sic).
