Matt Cardle won a standing ovation for his rendition of Roberta Flack's 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' on 'The X Factor' last night (06.11.10) and reduced his mentor Danii Minogue to tears
Matt Cardle reduced Danii Minogue and Cheryl Cole to tears with his performance on 'The X Factor' last night (06.11.10).
The 27-year-old pop hopeful sang a rendition of Roberta Flack's 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' earning a standing ovation from the judging panel, and his mentor and Cheryl could not control their emotions.
Afterwards, the four judges were unanimous in their praise for Matt.
Cheryl said: "That absolutely blew me away, that was amazing. I felt every single word that you said. It was spine-tingling. I get why you're a favourite. It was beautiful, absolutely beautiful."
Louis Walsh said: "Another outstanding performance. The standard is so high tonight but I think you have absolutely stolen the show. With you it's all about the voice. I think you're the person that everyone has to beat in this competition."
Simon Cowell added: "That was completely and utterly stunning, just stunning . What I like about you Matt is you knew you didn't get it right last week, you picked yourself back up, you didn't blame anybody and you came back out here."
Once Dannii had composed herself, she gushed: "You not only had the audience on their feet but all four judges. It was a perfect performance. I wish everyone at home knew the story about why you sang that song."
Matt has now revealed he chose to sing the track in honour of his mother's best friend Sharon, who died when he was 11.
Matt's family then brought up Sharon's four sons who became like brothers to him and his own sibling Dominic, 29.
He told the News of the World newspaper: "My mum and her best mate Sharon had promised to look after each other's kids if something happened.
"Their dad left before Sharon died so my friend Ben and his three brothers - twins Tom and Rob and Julian - were taken in by mum.
"It was a massive shock. I gained four more brothers overnight and they're all amazing. It made our family bigger and better."
'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' was played when Matt's adopted brother Julian married a girl called on Katie - whose dad had died when she was younger - on New Year's Eve (31.12.09).
Other contestants to impress on 'The X Factor' in American Anthems week included Rebecca Ferguson who received universal praise for her rendition of Bob Dylan's 'Make You Feel My Love' and boy band One Direction who performed 'Kids In America', complete with cheerleaders.
However, Mary Byrne faltered during her performance of Faith Hill's 'There You'll Be' and afterwards she admitted she hadn't been "in the zone" all week.
Cher Lloyd also failed to hit the heights she reached on last week's show and was criticised by Simon after her rendition of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys duet 'Empire State Of Mind' opened the programme.
He said: "After last week, I'm a little bit disappointed and I'll tell you why. Last week was 100 per cent original, it was different. This wasn't."
