Ann Widdecombe 'flying fat flag'
'Strictly Come Dancing' contestant Ann Widdecombe feels like she is ''flying the flag for fatties'' by appearing on the celebrity dance show
Ann Widdecombe is "flying the flag for fatties" on 'Strictly Come Dancing'.
The politician - who has been paired with Anton Du Beke in the BBC One show - has hit back at cruel jibes made by former judge Arlene Phillips.
She said: "When Arlene said I'd eaten too many bagels, my response was that she must have eaten too many sour grapes. I've never even met her.
"This isn't my reason for doing it, but I do think I'm at least flying the flag for fatties. You don't have to be svelte and a size eight to be able to get on the dancefloor."
The 63-year-old former MP admits she knows some people will be watching her performances purely to see "the elephant dancing", but she is thrilled by the public support she has received.
Ann added: "It was very gratifying when the ratings went up. There's genuine support from a lot of people who see me standing up for things that aren't so fashionable now, while some people tune in just to see the elephant dancing - I don't deceive myself on that score!"
