Suranne Jones: Corrie still number one
Former 'Coronation Street' actress Suranne Jones admits she still thinks the ITV1 soap is the best in Britain.
Suranne Jones still thinks 'Coronation Street' is the best soap.
The actress - who starred in the BBC One show as Karen McDonald from 2000 until 2004 - still enjoys watching the residents of Weatherfield, but admits she was left "pigeonholed" after leaving the show.
She said: "You do get pigeonholed. When I first left, I got offered lots of roles that made me think, 'Why would I do that? I could have just stayed in 'Corrie',' because I do think 'Corrie' is the best soap.
"It was only last year when I was nominated for a BAFTA for 'Unforgiven' that people started going, 'Right, well she's good, isn't she?' "
Suranne has appeared in a series of shows since then, most recently starring in 'Single Father' alongside David Tennant.
Describing the ITV1 programme to Stylist magazine, she said: "It's a really well-written drama about a man whose wife dies and he's left to raise the kids. I play his wife's best friend, who he then falls in love with. It's a dreadful situation to be in, but there's dark humour in it. You think, 'God, just nothing is going right for this couple!' and the question is whether their love is true or if they've just been thrown together by grief."
Suranne's father is a huge fan of the programme, but her mother is more interested in her co-star David Tennant.
She said: "Mum's got to a point where she just fancies everybody, so you can imagine what she's like about David. Dad will say whether he likes it or not, is very honest and, after this one, he did send me a text saying he was proud of me."
'Single Father' is due to begin on BBC One on October 10 at 9pm.
