Cheryl Cole shocked 'The X Factor' viewers last night (03.10.10) by putting Cher Lloyd and Katie Waissel through to the live finals, despite them giving substandard performances

Cheryl Cole shocked 'The X Factor' viewers last night (03.10.10) by putting Cher Lloyd through to the live finals, despite her not even singing.

The 17-year-old singer broke down in tears and couldn't finish a whole song at the Judges' Houses stage of the competition, where she was performing for mentor Cheryl and Black Eyed Peas star

However, Cheryl still selected Cher and Katie Waissel - who also cried during her performance of 'Smile' - through to the final stages of the competition along with Rebecca Ferguson, instead of favourite Gamu Nhengu.

Cher has reportedly now been given 24 hour access to a counsellor to prepare her for the show and help her come to terms with the recent death of her uncle, Edward.

A source close to the show told The Sun newspaper: "Cher's close to the edge, constantly in tears. She needs someone there all the time.

"A trained counsellor will be on standby 24/7. Whenever she needs someone to talk to they'll be there.

"They can't afford Cher's well-being to deteriorate any further."

The other three mentors on the singing reality show - Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Dannii Minogue - also picked their choice of acts in the Over 28s, Groups and Boys categories to go through to the next stage of the competition.

Although each judge has three acts in the final, on this Saturday's (09.10.10) show it is believed they will be able to pick a Wild Card fourth performer to return to the competition.

The public are then expected to vote for which of these four hopefuls they would like to return to the show permanently.

'The X Factor' returns to ITV1 on Saturday at 07.30pm.
