'X Factor' favourite Cher Lloyd and Katie Waissel both broke down in tears last night (02.10.10) as they performed for a place in the show's live finals

Both Cher Lloyd and Katie Waissel broke down on 'The X Factor' last night (02.10.10).

The two were tipped to go through to the live finals in Cheryl Cole's Girls category but now face an uncertain future after their performances in front of their mentor and her helper will.i.am went awry.

Prior to her performance, Cher revealed she was suffering from tonsillitis and struggled to sing.

Cheryl hugged the teenager and offered her a second chance to begin again, but when she stalled for a second time, the 16 year old whispered "I'm done" and left the room.

Meanwhile, Katie broke down during her performance of 'Smile', admitting it was an "emotional song" for her to sing, but Cheryl and will.i.am were unimpressed.

Cheryl said afterwards: "She's a drama queen."

Her pal added: "She messed that up. She sings good, she just f-ed that one up."

There were also tears with Louis Walsh's Over 28s category when 50-year-old checkout worker Mary Byrne broke down after speaking of how much appearing in the finals would mean to her.

She said: "I have the biggest ache in my heart for today. The ache that I have is a longing for something that I have wanted all of my life. I've never had the courage and now at 50 I have the courage. I just want it so much."

Mary went on to perform Coldplay's 'Fix You', but forgot some of the words, prompting Louis to admit to helper Sharon Osbourne he was unsure whether to risk putting her through to the finals.

He said: "The problem is Sharon, could I rely on her on a Saturday night in front of 20 million people? She's so emotional, but she's so likeable.

The Groups were also hit with angst after 1Direction - formed by rejected singers from the Boys category - were thrown into chaos when Louis Tomlinson was hospitalised after being stung by a sea urchin.

After a desperate wait to perform, the group were eventually faced with Simon and Sinitta, who seemed impressed by their rendition of 'Torn'.

After hearing performances from the eight acts in their respective categories, Cheryl, Louis, Simon and Dannii Minogue all admitted they were struggling to choose a final three.

Their choices will be revealed on tonight's (03.10.10) show.
