'Strictly Come Dancing' hopeful Ann Widdecombe has blamed the Pope for wrecking her training schedule

Ann Widdecombe thinks the Pope ruined her 'Strictly Come Dancing' chances.

The former MP - who took five days out of her training schedule for the celebrity dance contest to report on Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Britain - admits she is worried it will affect her performance in the live shows.

The devout Catholic said: "I took five days which put me behind. I was on Sky News while the rest practised. I don't expect to go very far."

However Ann - who was inspired to take part in the BBC One show after watching former ITN political editor John Sergeant's hilarious routines in 2008 - promised she will bring some "fun" to the show.

The 62-year-old said: "I was asked for years to take part but turned it down. But John made it fun and that's what I want to bring."

However, Ann has vowed to take the competition seriously, and promises to "give as good as she gets."

She added: "I will have a no nonsense attitude."

This year's 14 contestants also include rugby player Gavin Henson, 'Holby City' actress Patsy Kensit, Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams and DJ Goldie.

Legendary actress Felicity Kendal, 63, has also been signed up, along with magician Paul Daniels, 72, who was selected by the BBC for being a "national treasure".
