Kieron Richardson comes out
'Hollyoaks' star Kieron Richardson has revealed he identifies with his character's new storyline, as he is also gay
'Hollyoaks' actor Kieron Richardson has revealed he is gay.
The 20-year-old star - who plays Ste Hay in the Channel 4 soap - admitted he made the decision to publicly declare his sexuality after his character was faced with a new storyline, which sees him embark on a same-sex relationship with drug dealer Brendan Brady (Emmett J Scanlan).
He explained: "I feel that it's relevant and the storyline is relevant to some situations in my life. If maybe I can help people that are going through the same thing then it's a bonus.
"I am gay in real life and at 20 years old I kind of accepted it myself and now I can finally relate to my character Ste that he's 20 and he's going through things that I went through in my past."
The actor explained while his family and friends already knew he was gay, he became the subject of speculation about his sexuality when appearing on reality television show 'Dancing on Ice' earlier in the year.
Kieron told 'This Morning': When I was on 'Dancing on Ice', newspapers speculated and tried to say, 'We kind of know and if you want to say you can do your story with us and get it out there'.
"At that point, my personal life took a back step and it was more about the competition and trying to get through the next week rather than get a few column inches in the newspaper and maybe raise my profile at the time. But it wasn't about that."
