Hayley Cropper's disastrous wedding
'Coronation Street' couple Hayley and Roy Cropper are set to face a wedding day ''disaster'' as they prepare to legally marry for the first time
Hayley and Roy Cropper will face a wedding day "disaster."
The unconventional couple are set to legally marry during celebrations of the 50th anniversary of 'Coronation Street', but actress Julie Hesmondhalgh - who plays transsexual seamstress Hayley - admits the occasion will be far from stress-free.
She explained: "It's all very dramatic. There's a bit of a disaster on the way, as the steam train taking Hayley to the church is sabotaged by Mary (Patti Clare). So I end up chasing the train on this pump trolley, powered by Becky (Katherine Kelly) and Fiz (Jennie McAlpine). It should be hilarious to watch."
Hayley - who was born Harold Patterson - changed her name by deed poll to Hayley Cropper back in 1999, when she had her relationship with Roy (David Neilson) blessed, but the couple never legally wed as UK law did not allow transsexuals to marry in their new gender until 2004.
Julie also revealed that she loved her "action heroine" scenes in the 'Coronation Street' Siege storyline in which Tony Gordon (Gray O'Brien) takes Hayley and Carla Connor (Alison King) hostage in the factory with a gun.
She told new! magazine: "It's been a right year for me! I'm used to being a mum, pootling in on the train, doing a couple of lines in Underworld and going home. Suddenly, I'm an action heroine! I loved it, though."
