Simon Cowell wanted solo Factor
Simon Cowell was tempted to be the only member of the 'X Factor' judging panel, after deciding he didn't need help from Louis Walsh, Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue
Simon Cowell wants to be the only 'X Factor' judge.
The music mogul - who heads up the reality show panel - considered getting rid of Louis Walsh and choosing the contestants alone after their colleagues Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole were forced to take time out from the competition.
Discussing the new series, Simon joked: "I just want to apologise, there's no Cheryl, there's no Dannii. Thinking about it, we don't even need you Louis. This is the new judging panel on the show this year, it's just me. It will be better."
Louis laughed in reply: "It's 'The Simon Cowell Show'!"
While Cheryl recovered from malaria, and Dannii celebrated the birth of her first child, son Ethan, the pair were joined by a series of guest judges to help them whittle down the singing hopefuls.
Despite being absent from the programme for several weeks, Cheryl is delighted about returning to 'The X Factor' and can't wait to discover which category of contestants she has been given.
She said: "I'm absolutely gutted I missed the last auditions and the bootcamp stage, but I'm really excited and looking forward to seeing what Simon and Louis and Nicole have chosen. I can't wait to get my category so I can get my teeth into it. I will be raring to go by the Judges' Homes stage."
The new series of the show airs on Saturday (21.08.10) on ITV1 at 7.30pm, and includes a mixture of amusing and talented acts.
The star audition from the opening episode is Zimbabe-born Gamu Nhengu, who auditioned in Glasgow, who received a standing ovation and wowed the crowds with her soulful rendition of 'Walking On Sunshine'.
Louis went on to praise this year's contestants as some of the best yet, adding: "It's going to be a great series, I promise. Because the talent is really, really good."
