Ricky Whittle gives evidence
Ricky Whittle told police he was trying to win back his ex-girlfriend Carley Stenson the night he is accused of deliberately running over a photographer.
Ricky Whittle was trying to win back his ex-girlfriend the night he drove into a paparazzi.
The former 'Hollyoaks' star denied deliberately running over photographer Stephen Farrell out of frustration at being pictured with former lover and co-star Carley Stenson, who he was driving home following a night out in November.
Ricky - who had left separately from Carley and planned to meet with her on a nearby side street in a bid to detract attention - said in a statement to police, which was read out in Liverpool Crown Court yesterday (10.08.10): "I just wanted to get my girlfriend - my ex-girlfriend - home.
"It was going really well and I wanted to get back with her. I miss her like crazy."
Ricky denies charges of reckless driving but admits hitting the photographer with his red American Dodge, though he could not explain what happened.
Giving evidence, the 30-year-old star said he was sorry he'd caused any injuries, but didn't realised he had knocked Stephen over because when he looked back in his rear view mirror the photographer was standing up looking at his camera.
He told the court: "I just thought what a bunch of idiots and I thought 'Great, that picture is going to be in the papers.' "
The actor - who is accused of deliberately swerving his car to strike the photographer - also admitted he was "ashamed" of spending the night in jail.
He said: "I'm ashamed I'm in court, that I've spent the night in the cell, but I'm proud of the fact that I didn't lose my temper. I was calm in that situation.
"I'm not an angry, aggressive person, I didn't intend to hit him."
The trial continues.
