Ricky Whittle trial begins
The first day of Ricky Whittle's trial for dangerous driving began today (09.08.10) at Liverpool Crown Court.
Ricky Whittle deliberately hit a photographer with his car "in frustration", a court has heard.
The ex-'Hollyoaks' actor lashed out on November 27 - weeks after splitting from co-star Carley Stenson - as he didn't want to be pictured with his ex-girlfriend but had agreed to give her and a friend a lift home from a party in Liverpool, claimed prosecutors at Liverpool Crown Court.
Prosecutor Paul Becker said: "He was working hard and in no mood for the paparazzi to take photographs of him and Miss Stenson together."
The 12-person jury were told that the actor had agreed to collect the two women from a location close to the venue, but were followed by a car full of photographers, including Stephen Farrell.
The court heard that the photographer was taking pictures next to the star's car, but not blocking it, when the vehicle suddenly veered to the left, hitting the paparazzi.
The prosecutor said: "The prosecution's case is that the defendant, irritated by the presence of the paparazzi, had deliberately turned his wheel to the left in order to vent his frustration towards Mr Farrell."
Jurors were also shown CCTV footage of the altercation.
The victim sprained his knee and hurt his hand and was later treated at hospital.
Ricky - who has pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving later voluntarily attended St Helens Police Station.
The trial continues.
