Ryan Connor has been axed from 'Coronation Street'.

The teenager - played by Ben Thompson - will reportedly depart Weatherfield in October in a storyline which sees him take up a university place in Scotland, leaving the door open for a possible return in the future.

A source said: "By sending Ryan to Scotland, he leaves the door open for him to pop back.

"But it's definitely the beginning of the end. His character is on the very periphery, if there at all."

Ben's axing is reportedly due to concerns of producer Phil Collinson, who is said to believe the current cast is too young, echoing similarities of rival soap 'Hollyoaks'.

The source added to The Sun newspaper: "Phil has made no secret of the fact he thinks 'Coronation Street' has too many teenagers.

"He reckons it needs more 'real' characters like Eileen Grimshaw and is worried it's too much like 'Hollyoaks.' "

A spokesperson for the show has confirmed Ben's contract will not be renewed.

I agree with Mr Collinson,it's time to get Coronation Street back to its grass roots, away from the unbelievable story lines and plots,The early days of CS were much more enjoyable with the likes of Elsie Tanner,Ena Sharples and the dotty Martha Longhurst, and who can forget Annie Walker?ordinary people getting on with their lives,it was more entertaining then, than it is now.
