Jack Duckworth to die in tram crash?
'Coronation Street' favourite Jack Duckworth (Bill Tarmey) will reportedly die when a tram crashes in Weatherfield later this year.
Jack Duckworth will reportedly die in the 'Coronation Street' tram crash.
The well-loved character - who has been played by Bill Tarmey for more than 30 years - will bow out of the show in December as part of the special stunt planned to mark the ITV soap's 50th anniversary,
A source said: "People who have read the scripts have told Bill they were left in tears by his ending.
"It will be a magnificent way for him to go, in some of the soap's most dramatic and memorable scenes ever."
Bill, 69, announced his intention to quit the show earlier this year.
It was originally speculated that he would continue to make occasional guest appearances on the programme and he is said to be shocked by his exit storyline, which will also see him told he has terminal cancer in October.
An insider said: "Bill agreed to stay on for the 50th anniversary programme but I don't think even he was expecting to be killed off under a falling tram and brick debris.
"It's the exciting ending he was promised but privately he would have liked to have headed off from Weatherfield still alive and kicking.
"He knew how much his character meant to fans and would have loved to have returned from time to time.
"In scripts which are being kept under lock and key his character is told he has got cancer but ultimately that's not what kills him in the end."
Troubled teacher John Stape (Graeme Hawley) is also strongly rumoured to die in the accident, while Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin), Ciaran McCarthy, (Keith Duffy) and Maria Connor (Samia Smith) are others speculated to meet their end when the viaduct at the end of the street collapses, sending a tram careering onto the cobbles.
A 'Coronation Street' spokesperson declined to comment on the reports.
