Piping Live!

The second week of August sees Glasgow turn into the piping center of the world

Bagpipes, it’s fair to say, have a bit of an image problem. But while the masses have been busy groaning and cringing at our national instrument, Piping Live! has spent the last seven years building up a vibrant, exciting and internationally-reaching festival in celebration of the old bags, now typically attracting over 30,000 fans over a week. It’s actually turned into more of a celebration of various older Scottish traditions, in their new forms: highlights this year include the Glenfiddich tent in George Square, with whisky tasting and barrel-making workshops, and Gaelic classes for beginners, being held at CCA throughout the festival, as well as a chance to see some of the international stars of the Scottish folk music scene. Or you could get involved yourself: try out a taster session of the pipes and drums, or register for a week-long summer school workshop. For more info, see www.pipinglive.co.uk
