Kings of Leon abandoned a gig after bassist Jared Followill was hit in the mouth with bird poo.

The band was appearing at the open air Verizon Ampitheatre in St. Louis, Missouri, on Friday (23.07.10) when they were splattered with pigeon droppings from birds which had nested in the rafters.

Despite support bands The Postelles and The Stills already having been hit by faeces from the feathered animals, the group thought it would be "unfair" to cancel the concert, but walked off stage after just three songs following the unpleasant incident.

Jared said: "The band felt it would be unfair to the fans to cancel the show at that late moment. We couldn't believe what The Postelles and The Stills looked like after their sets. We didn't want to cancel the show, so we went for it. We tried to play.

"It was ridiculous. I was hit by pigeons during each of the first three songs. We had 20 songs on the set list so by the end I would have been covered head to toe."

The band's manager Andy Mendelsohn went on to add the incident wasn't only "disgusting" but also a "toxic health hazard" to the band.

He explained: "Jared was hit several times during the first two songs. On the third song, when he was hit in the cheek and some of it landed near his mouth, they couldn't deal with it any longer. It's not only disgusting, it's a toxic health hazard. They really tried to hang in there."
