Stuart Cable surprised to reach 40
Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones has paid tribute to his late former bandmate Stuart Cable, who was found dead at home yesterday (07.06.10)
Stuart Cable never thought he would "make it" to 40.
The former Stereophonics drummer - who was found dead at his Welsh home yesterday (07.06.10) following a suspected drinking binge - told his former bandmate Kelly Jones just a few weeks ago that he was amazed to have reached the milestone age following years of drink and drug abuse.
Paying tribute to his childhood friend, singer Kelly said: "I sent him a text last week to say happy birthday and he replied, 'I never thought I'd make it to 40.'
"I texted him back and I said, 'You will live to be 100 mate.' I'm in total shock. I was going to see Stuart for a pint and wish him happy birthday as well."
Stuart was sacked from the band in 2003 amid concerns from Kelly and bassist Richard Jones over his heavy drinking and substance abuse.
However, the trio - who went to school together in Cwmaman, South Wales - had patched up their differences in recent years.
Kelly added: "We have been speaking to each other for the past five years. When people break up in bands no one really knows what it's all about. But between me and Stuart, all our disagreements were solved within one year. Stuart would be the first person to admit what happened when the band separated. There were no regrets."
Police are not treating the musician's death as suspicious, but a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out in the coming days.
One devastated unnamed friend said: We've been told that he choked on his own vomit and that is what killed him. It is so tragic.
"But Stuart was a real party animal and loved the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. It was how he would have wanted to go."
