Beverley Callard credits her new fiance with saving her life.
The 'Coronation Street' actress - who plays Rovers Return landlady Liz McDonald in the ITV1 soap - contemplated suicide just over a year ago after suffering from severe depression but now has a new focus thanks to her engagement to Jon McEwan.
She said: "I can't keep it secret any longer. Jon and I are getting married! I am so in love, and so ecstatic to be engaged. Jon and I just fit. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him. It sounds dramatic, but he definitely saved my life. I'll be the luckiest woman alive to call Jon my husband."
The 53-year-old star - who has been married three times - spent two months in London clinic the Priory last February, where she was given 12 bouts of electric shock therapy, and says she attempted suicide twice, but Jon stopped her from going through with it.
She added in an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper: "It wasn't just the fact that Jon rumbled me to the nurses that saved me from ending it all. It was much more than that. He stood by me, through everything. He never gave up on me, never gave up trying to understand my torment.
"He proved I had lots to live for, that I could be happy again - even when the future looked bleak."
