Denise Welch tried to kill herself after developing post-natal depression.
The 'Loose Women' presenter - who is married to actor Tim Healy - was so unhappy after the birth of her son Matthew in 1989, she attempted to leap out of a window and had to be stopped by her mother.
She said: "Good friends came to the flat to coo over the baby, but I couldn't even force a smile.
"After they had left, a terrible blackness and an indescribable feeling of despair crept up on me. Within about 20 seconds, I felt suicidal. I desperately needed to put an end to the unbearable way I was feeling, and the next minute mum found me trying to climb out of the window of the flat.
"Mum pulled me back and immediately called the hospital."
The 51-year-old star - who has confessed to a severe drink and drug problem in the past - also claims her condition put strain on her marriage.
She added in her autobiography 'Pulling Myself Together', which is being serialised in the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Tim was under huge amount of pressure with his work at the time. Added to this, he had a newborn baby and his wife was terrible poorly.
"I kept phoning him in a hysterical state, sobbing uncontrollably and pleading with him to come home.
"It was so hard for Tim, especially as we had only been together for just over a year. He would go into the garden and scream at the top of his voice, he now tells me."
