Joanna Lumley was Bill Roache's favourite screen lover.

The 77-year-old actor - whose 'Coronation Street' persona Ken Barlow is the soap's longest-running character - has admitted the highlight of his alter-ego's love life was when he was able to lock lips with the glamorous British actress, who played Ken's girlfriend Elaine Perkins in 1973.

Discussing his womanising character, he said: "I've lost count of romances I've had in the show, not to mention the four weddings. The lovely Joanna Lumley being one of my girlfriends was a particular highlight. Not a bad life is it?"

Despite turning 78 later this month, Bill is keen for his alter-ego - who is married to Deirdre Barlow (Anne Kirkbride) - to be embroiled in more storylines similar to his affair with Martha Fraser (Stephanie Beacham) last year.

He said: "I thought it was great last year having a girlfriend especially at my age. A few more would be great.

"Ken did misbehave last year with Stephanie Beacham. I'm pleased about that too."

Bill has also admitted he has no plans to leave the soap and wants to continue playing the writer as long as he can still be "useful" to ITV1 bosses.

He added to Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper: "I love my job. I don't want to retire. While they want me, while I'm useful - I'd love to stay."
