As soon as singer Skin entered the stage shrouded in a bizarre silver and gold Christmas decoration that completely covered her head, it was clear at this show Skunk Anansie, now as then, aren't ones for convention.
As the fiery front woman leaped maniacally and rolled around the stage to the spleen-wrenching, violent intensity of opener ‘Selling Jesus’, her enthusiasm had her almost fall off the front speaker. Once the pre-festive tinsel was discarded, the shaven headed singer cut a striking figure, with both her and the band's performance second to none.
Touring in support of recently released best of album ‘Smashes And Trashes’, it was of no surprise that the recently reformed band ran through their hits, including the adrenaline-inducing ‘I Can Dream’, ‘Brazen (Weep)’,’ Hedonism’ and the more emotive strains of ballad ‘Weak’, all of which reflected their great musical prowess. New song ‘Tear The Place Up’ had a more edgy and party vibe to it, but paled in comparison to so many other powerful numbers from their back catalogue.
Skins coup de grâce - jumping into the audience to crowd surf over the fans - showed their intent, and the strength of these songs on show make you realise just how much Skunk Anansie have been missed.
