First word - Har Mar Superstar interview
Risqué performer Har Mar Superstar (aka Minnesota native Sean Tillman) is one of America’s most flamboyant pop exports. Ahead of his arrival in Scotland he admits his enthusiasm for both Susan Boyle and dental hygiene
First record you ever bought
‘We Don’t Need Another Hero’ by Tina Turner.
Last time you were chatted up
Last night, when I played my hometown, Minnesota, some girl came up to me. It’s pretty common.
First film you saw that really moved you
ET was the first time I cried at a movie.
First movie you ever went on a date to
That was Arachnophobia.
Last time you cried
I guess it was recently when my friend Jerry died – the guy from !!! [Jerry Fuchs – who was a member of bands !!! and The Juan MacLean – died after falling down an elevator shaft in Brooklyn on Nov 18, 2009].
Last great meal you cooked
Cooked? I’ve been on tour for so long. I’m not really a cook. I can follow a recipe, though.
Last extravagant purchase you made
The last compulsive purchase I made was Susan Boyle’s album. She’s been kind of an ongoing joke with my family. Every time someone would come into the room I’d sing her version of ‘Wild Horses’ and bring down the mood. I like her story though; I think she’s kind of awesome.
It was Apollonia from [the film] Purple Rain.
Last book you read
I re-read The Grapes of Wrath. It was my favourite book when I was 16, but I read it now and I feel a lot dumber.
Last time you were starstruck
Probably when I met Gilbert O’Sullivan. I don’t know why, I don’t really get starstruck.
First great piece of advice that you were given
A memorable one, that Sharon Osborne said to me, was, ‘Keep all the rights to your publishing.’
First thing you’d do if you ran the country
My country, the US? I would socialise medicine and legalise marijuana. Oh, and I’d probably legalise prostitution too.
Last meal on earth – what would it be
Probably a sushi appetizer and then a really rich lasagne.
First song that you’ll sing at karaoke
‘Ben’ by Michael Jackson. It’s about a pet rat – a very emotional number.
First time you realised that you were famous
I don’t feel famous.
Last time someone criticised your work
Constantly I guess – all the time. I don’t pay attention to what other people think.
First three words your friends would use to describe you
Funny, considerate, drunk.
First concert you ever attended
It was Gun’n’Roses on the Use Your Illusion tour in Minneapolis.
Last time you bought someone flowers
I bought my mom some for Mother’s Day.
First thing you think of when you wake up in the morning
Brushing my teeth.
Last thing you think of before you go to sleep
Probably brushing my teeth again. I brush three times a day.
