The best classical & opera

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra: Scotland’s Music ‘07 Halfway through BBC Scotland’s year long festival of Scottish musical styles, Mary Ann Kennedy presents a programme for live broadcast on Radio Scotland that includes orchestral pieces by Scottish composers James MacMillan, Edward McGuire and Hamish MacCunn’s Land of the Mountain and the Flood. And it’s free. City Halls, Glasgow, Sun 10 Jun.

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra More free music from the BBC SSO, which is very much enjoying inviting people to its new(ish) home. This time, it’s a live broadcast of Sean Rafferty’s drivetime classical music programme for Radio 3, which features the orchestra and guests in a mix of performance, chat and arts news. City Halls, Glasgow, Fri 8 Jun.

Phantom of the Opera Feeling brave? You might need to be to watch the original 1922 silent movie being screened as part of this year’s ubiquitous West End Festival and accompanied by a new score for piano and cathedral organ, written and played by Karen MacIver, that breaks into the techniques of improvisation from a classical background. St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow, Fri 15 and Sat 16 Jun.
