The Nature Boys - Girl of the Night
Harking back to the Postcard days, when Scottish music strutted its stuff under cool shades and intricate guitars, Nature Boys look to similar tight rhythms and flowing melodies to create a noise worth dancing to. Consisting of Cammy Shiels (vocals), Mark Cooper (guitar/vocals), Ben Irvine (bass) and Simon Haddow (drums) it's a simple mix, but it does the job. Here's the guys on why their getting back to nature in Edinburgh.
How did Nature Boys get together?
We have been best mates since school and have always loved music, going to gigs and having a proper blow out. We thought after a while we may as well give this band caper a bash so the Nature Boys were born
What role has music played in your lives?
For years our social lives have revolved around music. We've met so many sound people kicking around the music scene. I think generally, if you are feeling a bit down, shove on a favourite album and it immediately changes your mood.
Your sound seems to go back to the Postcard days of Josef K and Orange Juice? Is that the music you admire?
We admire all kinds of music, but if we had to pick one category it would be late 70s punk of Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash, The Buzzcocks etc. It has amazing passion and attitude which we think is slightly lacking in a lot of modern bands.
How would you like to be seen yourselves?
As an unpretentious band who are all about having a laugh and entertaining the fans, with energetic and, at times, chaotic live shows. We really appreciate anyone who comes out to see us play and it is important to us that our audience have the best night possible. We would like to be seen as a live band who gives 110% at every show and expends every ounce of energy we have.
What's the most exciting thing about Scottish music today?
Being an Edinburgh band, we've found there are a lot of amazing acts, who all seem to support each other, which is really refreshing. Over the last year or so it has really helped Edinburgh nuture a buzzing underground music scene.
What's the plan for the rest of 2009?
We don't have any concrete plans as yet. We really just want to keep gigging as much as possible and try to entertain anyone who comes to see us.
What's the nicest thing anyone's said about your music?
A comment that always sticks in our mind's is "Watching The Nature Boys is the most fun you can have with your clothes on." I think that boy might have had a few too many shandies though!!
Why should people listen to The Nature Boys?
It's an experience.
Nature Boys play Sneaky Pete's in Edinburgh on 28 Aug and The Box in Glasgow on 5 Sep.
