The Cinematic Orchestra

Ma Fleur (Ninja Tune)

Orchestra leader Jason Swinscoe’s genius is his lightness of touch. Rather than labouring the point with the same hooks, his music ebbs and flows like music has a simple plaintive beauty that is too often forgotten in an attempts to sound ‘catchy’ or even worse ‘different’.

After enjoying vocal stylings from the mighty Roots Manuva in the past, this record is augmented a return visit for soul veteran Fontella Bass, former Lamb chanteause Lou Rhodes and new find, Montreal’s Patrick Watson who adds a Anthony Hegarty-like vocal to the already otherworldly proceedings.

We’ve come a long way from the stunted, blunted beats of Mo’Wax Records and the development of Cinematic Orchestra proves widescreen head music can be mellow, contemplative and still furiously compelling.
