It is not too late for Erskine Week!
The veterans’ charity Erskine is fast approaching one of the most important weeks in its calendar; Erskine Week.
From 1st to 8th June 2009, friends and supporters of Erskine will be pulling out all the stops to make its second Erskine Week a record-breaking fundraiser.
Erskine is hoping that its many supporters will follow in the footsteps of former Lance Corporal, Martin Hogg, 37, from Kirkcaldy, in raising funds throughout the dedicated week of action which aims to raise awareness of the work carried out by Erskine at five care homes across Scotland.
He is climbing both Snowdon and Ben Nevis in one weekend despite suffering a serious spinal injury during a training exercise in Germany over 10 years ago.
This lead to Martin, who served with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers, being discharged from the Army in a wheelchair; but now he is determined to complete the challenge for fellow ex-Servicemen and women.
He will attempt both climbs accompanied by his fiancé Gillian Graham, 28, who also has close links to the military through her family.
Martin, 37, said: “This time last year I was in a very bad way, relying on a walking stick and this year I will be using walking poles and climbing two mountains. When I was off work I thought I really needed to do something to give something back. Please do your bit for Erskine Week as every penny raised can make a difference to the lives of Scotland’s ex-Service men and women.”
Other events taking place throughout the country start with the grand opening to Erskine Week with the Bridge the Gap for Erskine on Monday 1st June. Then, schoolchildren and supporters of Erskine will walk over and back across the Clyde on the Erskine Bridge, Renfrewshire, to try and raise as much money as possible for the veterans’ charity.
Or, why don’t you take a leaf out of Methlick RBLS’ book, which is holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday 6th June at Methlick Church from 10am to 2pm.
No matter how big or small your chosen event is every penny makes a difference to the quality of life for over 1,370 veterans cared for by Erskine each year.
So please help make a difference between 1st and 8th June 2009.
