Wander through the doors of Edinburgh Uni’s Potterrow on 22 May and you might be in for a bit of a surprise. Over the last year or so the venue has once again started to host a growing number of club nights and large events run by some of the capital’s more established promoters. Don’t expect your usual fix of union pop fodder tonight though, it’s time for another Xplicit takeover. Three headline guests combine to dish out a broad spectrum of beats, joining the dots between grime, hip hop, dubstep, D&B, electronic and more. Probably the most eagerly anticipated act on the bill are Chase & Status. Signed to Andy C’s Ram Records, the production duo from London have seen their profile shoot through the roof over the last 12 months.
Diversity is the key for these boys, and their sound straddles a wide range of musical styles in a manner that many have tried but few have mastered. 80s influenced dubstep anyone?
Bringing a live element to the night are Foreign Beggars, who’ll be testing the talents of the sound engineer with furious a mix of rapping, beatboxing, turntablism and freestyling. Widely regarded as the most versatile hip hop group in the UK, they’ve been in the game long enough to know what works where and when, and should slot nicely into the night’s proceedings. Finally, Shy FX is the last name you need to know about, but if you’ve any interest in quality drum & bass/jungle then we’re going to assume you already do.
