Gaming round-up: May 2009

Summer is almost here, which can mean the start of a lean period for gamers, however May is shaping up quite nicely. Damnation stands out amongst the usual movie tie-ins as reboots of the Terminator and Star Trek franchises hit cinema screens.

First up is the inevitable X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Activision) due out on the 1st for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC. It looks like a violent, action-packed third-person hack and slash fest with a story which inevitably ties in with the movie.

The Destiny of Zorro (505 Games) promises some sword fighting action as players carve Zs in the air with their Wii remotes. It is an action adventure game released on the 5th exclusively for the Wii.

On the 13th there is Star Trek DAC to coincide with the franchise reboot hitting cinemas. It is a top down multiplayer game with a focus on space battles and it looks to be a casual game which will be available for download on XBLA, PSN and PC.

Battlestations: Pacific (Eidos) is available on PC and Xbox 360 from the 15th. It is a sequel to Battlestations: Midway and offers a blend of action and strategy with a historical backdrop. Set during WWII you play as Japan or America and fight to dominate the Pacific Ocean.

On the 19th there is another big summer movie tie-in as Terminator: Salvation (Evolved Games and Equity Games) comes out for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. It is a single player only third-person shooter with a focus on run and cover game-play.

Bionic Commando (Capcom) should appear on the 22nd. Developed by GRIN this is a remake of the old NES game will be released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. It is a third-person shooter with plenty of action and you play as a bionic commando fighting against a terrorist invasion and a corrupt government.

Damnation (Codemasters) is due out on the 22nd. Billed as the world’s first vertical shooter the game is set on massive sprawling maps. Armed with steam-punk inspired weaponry and a host of acrobatic special moves you must plot a course through the large seamless environments. This looks to be an interesting new twist on the action genre and will be coming out on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Another title due out on the 22nd which will excite fans of violent no-holds barred fighting is UFC 2009 Undisputed (THQ). You can create your own character and embark on a career, there are over 80 real fighters included and of course there is a multiplayer option for battling with mates. It will be released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
