Elbow battle unknown at Ivors

Elbow could lose out on an Ivor Novello award to an unknown singer who has never had a hit record.

The group - who have won two BRIT Awards and the Nationwide Mercury Prize for their album 'The Seldom-Seen Kid' - face competition from The Leisure Society singer Nicholas Hemming for the Best Song Musically and Lyrically at the prestigious songwriting awards ceremony.

Nicholas - who currently works in a warehouse - is the first person in the awards' 54-year history to be nominated as a self-published and self-produced artist for the group's debut single.

Despite failing to chart, 'The Last Of The Melting Snow' was released to widespread critical acclaim last December and Elbow frontman Guy Garvey admitted it was his favourite song of last year.

Elbow, who are nominated for their track 'One Day Like This',

and The Last Shadow Puppets' 'My Mistakes Were Made For You' have also been recognised in the Best Contemporary Song category.

They face competition from Dizzee Rascal and his songwriting team - which includes Calvin Harris - for 'Dance Wiv Me' and The Ting Tings' 'That's Not My Name'.

Coldplay and Duffy have received the most nominations, with three each.

Both acts are recognised in the PRS For Music Most Performed Work and Best Selling British Song - Duffy and her songwriters for 'Mercy' and the group for 'Viva La Vida'. They are also featured in the Album Award category for 'Rockferry' and 'Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends'.

The 54th Ivor Novello Awards will take place at London's Grosvenor House on May 21.
