The best new nights in town. This month: Confusion Is Sex

Residents Not so much a resident as a ‘creator’; Gamma Ray, former promoter of the Bongo’s Hobo, has brought this new monthly event together.
Guests A live show from Berlin-based electro-punks Noblesse Oblige, a headline DJ appearance from Glasgow’s Dolby Anol, and further DJ sets beforehand and upstairs from Nick AKA (Cabaret Voltaire at Clash!), Kris Actualsize (Sneaky Pete’s Wasabi Disco) and the Come Collective.
Music policy ‘Trash disco and sleazy electro, with a bit of glam and indie thrown in.’
What they say ‘It’s not just about the music,’ says Gamma Ray. ‘I want to create a whole environment; there’ll be art installations and video projections, and the Bongo will resemble a David Lynch-style film set. I’ve got a bunch of girls dressed up as what I call the Freaky Brides, and there’ll be burlesque performers and bellydancers. I’ve been spending time in Berlin, and a lot of my inspiration has come from clubs I’ve been to there. There are plenty of nights that do burlesque in that VEGAS! manner, but none that aim for a sleazier, sexier aesthetic. I hope Edinburgh’s ready for it!’
What we say: Although the term ‘burlesque’ is a bit of a poisoned chalice these days, thanks to an abundance of French knicker-wearing show-offs flooding the market, we think Ms Ray can create a memorable night. After all, she managed to make middling indie night Hobo event clubbing for a few months there, and has pulled together some fine DJ talent here. And the night’s named after a Sonic Youth album – what’s not to get excited about?
