Originally signed to Side Salad Records, this London trio started off life as a post-punk revival band but if tonight’s showcase of their soon-to-be-released album Wild Young Hearts is anything to go by, have changed their direction rather considerably.
That’s not to say the new material is bad, quite the contrary, it’s just very different, and Shingai Shoniwa’s note-perfect vocals-which slip seamlessly from jazz to pop to ethereal highs-combined with the mellifluous rhythms and sanguine lyrics prove that in this case, the change was for the better.
Armed with huge hair, a huge guitar, and an equally huge voice, the diminutive lead singer is certainly the driving force behind the band, and the strongest tracks performed at tonight’s gig are the ones in which she sings acoustically, or with minimal help from her fellow band-mates.
New single ‘Don’t Upset the Rhythm’ might be the tune currently garnering the band some long-awaited attention, but it’s tracks like ‘24 Hours Ago’ and ‘Beat of my Heart’ which will ensure this band the success they so richly deserve.
