The Johnny 7

Many crimes against humour are regrettably pardoned when Comic Relief night comes around, and in the grand scheme of things a few guys playing lounge covers of classic pop hits while wearing black polo necks and joke shop moustaches is only a minor misdemeanour.
And so the J7 are revived for one night only with a heady line-up. Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake, though, bashful but camouflaged behind his ‘Kenny Rogers beard’, spiritedly singing his way through those most non-TFC classics ‘Mad World’ and ‘I Just Called to Say I Love You’. Or BMX Bandits’ Duglas T Stewart gliding onstage, holding a brief tête a tête with a moustachioed apple and then delivering a fine version of crooner’s classic ‘Call Me’ (the Tony Hatch one). Or Horse, inexplicably overpowering the rinky-dink piano in the background with a mighty ‘Nobody Does It Better’.
Among the impressive guest cast also giving in to the good cause were Sons and Daughters’ Adele Bethel and Camera Obscura’s Tracyanne Campbell, each doing their bit for a light-hearted show which deserves a return for the next deserving occasion.
