Bright Eyes

Cassadaga (Polydor)

FOLK ROCK

Is there anything Conor Oberst can’t do? Side-projects and record label exec duties aside, this is the talented troubadour’s seventh studio album, under the guise of Bright Eyes, released at the tender age of 27. It’s an utterly lovely listen from start to finish. The best of his hugely impressive releases to date; Cassadaga sways from sumptuous string-tinged country sing-a-longs to big riffed rock attacks, with shimmering female chorus-fuelled ballads in-between. Add to this Oberst’s trademark wavering vocals and poetic lyrics and guest appearances from Gillian Welch, M Ward, Ben Kweller and Janet Weiss among others and you’ve got a mesmerising album that his musical contemporaries will struggle to better.
