The Blue Note 7 - Mosaic
- Kenny Mathieson
- 5 March 2009
This septet was convened to celebrate this year’s 70th anniversary of the founding of Blue Note Records by Alfred Lion, although both the recording and an extensive American tour took place last year. The band features a number of top names in the contemporary jazz mainstream, led by pianist Bill Charlap, with trumpeter Nicholas Payton, saxophonists Steve Wilson and Ravi Coltrane, Peter Bernstein on guitar, Peter Washington on bass and Lewis Nash on drums.
That is a fail-safe line-up, guaranteed to deliver on quality, and so it proves. They work their way through eight classic tunes from the Blue Note vaults – Cedar Walton’s title track, Joe Henderson’s ‘Inner Urge’, McCoy Tyner’s ‘Search For Peace’, Bobby Hutcherson’s ‘Little B’s Poem’, Thelonious Monk’s ‘Criss Cross’, Herbie Hancock’s ‘Dolphin Dance’, Duke Pearson’s ‘Idle Moments’ and Horace Silver’s ‘The Outlaw’ – giving each a fresh arrangement in the process.
