Last Word: Rob Da Bank
Radio 1 DJ Rob Da Bank is also the brains behind Sunday Best records and Bestival. Here, he admits to the occasional cry, the odd nappy change and a whole lot of love for My Bloody Valentine
First record you ever bought
The theme tune to ET by John Williams. It made me cry!
Last time you were chatted up
I’ve gone beyond realising when that’s happening after 18 years with my wife. I just think people are being pleasant.
First film you saw that really moved you
The Wizard Of Oz. Watching it now, I still get het up about good and evil. It’s surprisingly scary.
First movie you ever went on a date to
Back To The Future. I’d love to say I didn’t see any of the film because I was snogging the girl on the back row – but I was too shy to even hold her hand. She didn’t see me again.
Last time you cried
I just read Lance Armstrong’s book about beating cancer and then winning the Tour De France. Not my kind of book but it was the only one in the hotel library. He’s a bloody amazing guy and it did make me whimper a bit.
Last book you read
Aside from Lance Armstrong’s book, I’m reading Yoga Mala by Pattabhi Jois, the founder of ashtanga yoga. I’m trying to better myself!
First thing you do when you’ve got time off work
Change nappies, drink alcohol, go to sleep.
Last great meal you cooked
Spring risotto, last spring.
Last extravagant purchase you made
A boat – only a small family sailing boat but I love sailing and the kids love it.
She knows who she is.
First great piece of advice you were given
Last time you were star struck
My Bloody Valentine at Bestival 2008.
First thing you’d do if you ran the country
Stop building airports and make childcare free.
Last meal on earth – what would it be
First song you’ll sing at karaoke
Last time you exploited your position to get something
Got an upgrade at a hotel in Egypt.
Last time someone criticised your work
My manager Ben Turner regularly
whips me into shape.
First time you realised you were famous
I don’t see myself as famous at all.
First three words your friends would use to describe you
Hairy, lanky, hard-working.
First concert you ever attended
Probably a brass band.
First thing you think of when you wake up in the morning
I wonder what that bloody racket is and realise it’s my children shouting for me.
Last time you bought someone flowers
The wife – last month.
Last thing you think of before you go to sleep
I try not to contemplate too much before sleep – or I’d stay up all night fretting.
Rob Da Bank’s compilation Sci-Fi Lo-Fi Vol.3 is released on 9 March through Soma Recordings.
