Gregor ‘G-Man’ James: Last Word

Gregor ‘G-Man’ James: Last Word

Gregor ‘G-Man’ James is a guitarist in Red Hot Chilli Pipers and frontman with electro dance outfit Danse or Die. Here he reveals the importance of alarm clocks, Michael J Fox and advice from roofers

First record you ever bought
Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock ‘Get On the Dancefloor’. I was nine years old and about to discover dance music. My second record was ‘Stakker Humanoid’.

Last time you were chatted up
In Germany, she was 50. I refused but there was a minute where I thought about expanding my horizons!

First film you saw that really moved you
Back to the Future. Michael J Fox playing ‘Johnny B Goode’ on the guitar made me want to be a guitarist!

Last time you cried
Watching The Elephant Man. That film always has me sobbing uncontrollably!

Last great meal you cooked
Last night I made my little sister haggis, neeps and tatties, with two drams mixed in for good measure.

First crush
Erika Eleniak from Baywatch.

Last book you read
DJing for Dummies.

First great piece of advice you were given
When I started playing guitar, my dad told me to ‘Be nice to people on the way up, because they’ll be nice to you on the way down’. I’ve since discovered that he got this from a guy who was fixing our roof!

Last time you were star struck
When the Red Hot Chilli Pipers met Paul McCartney – I’ve been a huge fan of The Beatles since birth.

First thing you’d do if you ran the country
I’d implement a communist music policy where everyone had to listen to what I told them to. Trance and opera would be outlawed.

Last meal on earth – what would it be
A pie supper with lots of cheap, chip shop ketchup.

First song you’ll sing at karaoke
‘The Greatest Love of All’ by Whitney Houston.

Last time you exploited your position to get something
Not so much exploited exactly but we were at a petrol station and were allowed to have anything we wanted because the guy recognised us – I chose some coffee, loads of doughnuts and five bags of sports mixture!

First time you realised you were famous
I don’t think of myself as being famous. However, I did fall out of a restaurant door trying to smoke a cigarette recently and two guys were talking about me whilst walking past – one said to the other, ‘isn’t that the guy from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers?’ and the other said, “Aye, he’s totally smashed”.

First concert you ever attended
A Radio 1 Roadshow featuring George Michael during his Faith years. I went with my Dad and big brothers. It was ace.

Last time someone criticised your work
It was the last time they ever criticised anything, ha!

First three words your friends would use to describe you
Mental, mental and mental.

Last time you bought someone flowers
Today, for my girlfriend.

First thing you think of when you wake up in the morning
I think about switching the alarm off . . I have a series of four alarm clocks, and a hi-fi that plays ‘Rapper’s Delight’ is the final one in the chain.

Last thing you think of before you go to sleep
What I’m doing the next day.
