Aidan Moffat & The Best-Ofs - How to Get to Heaven From Scotland

Lovable little Mr Doom and Gloom, or as he puts it, ‘Glasgow’s alcoholic lo-fi miserablist’ set out to write an album of positive love songs and this, the result, shows Arab Strap’s one-time frontman in playfully sentimental but happily twee-free mode. Reflecting on his ‘heart’s former keepers’, and discussing good and bad ‘necessary love sensations’ he is on neatly poetic form.
The leching, the crumbling hearts and the domestic rucks between men and women are woven around jangly folk, simple synthesiser beats and hummable melodies, giving a timely, very tuneful reminder that there’s more to Valentine’s Day than those tired Hallmark clichés.
